We avoid the word 'myth.' Most claims about data centers are conditional rather than false, and treating a legitimate concern as a myth is how organizations lose credibility with the people they are trying to inform.

Each entry states the claim as it is commonly made, summarizes what the evidence supports, and identifies the project-specific variables that determine the answer in any particular case.
Claim · Electric Rates
“Data centers always raise residential electric bills.”
What we know
Rate impacts depend heavily on utility structure, infrastructure investment, rate design, generation requirements and regulatory protections. Where a large load pays the allocated cost of the infrastructure built to serve it, the effect on other customer classes can be neutral. Where it does not, existing customers can absorb costs.
What depends on the project
Power requirements, utility territory, generation source, transmission upgrades, contract term and the negotiated tariff approved by the Public Service Commission.
Claim · Water
“Data centers consume enormous amounts of water.”
What we know
Water use varies by an order of magnitude or more depending on cooling design. Closed-loop and air-cooled facilities use comparatively little; open evaporative systems use substantially more. Reducing water use generally increases electricity use.
What depends on the project
Cooling technology, local climate, water source, facility density, and whether the serving utility has treatment and distribution headroom.
Claim · Jobs
“Data centers create thousands of jobs.”
What we know
Construction phases can employ hundreds to thousands of skilled trades workers for a period of years. Permanent operations employment is much smaller relative to capital investment, though it typically pays above regional medians.
What depends on the project
Campus size, number of phases, operator staffing model, degree of automation, and whether local hiring commitments are written and reported.
Claim · Taxes
“Data centers do not pay their fair share of local taxes.”
What we know
Data centers concentrate high assessed value on small parcels with limited demand for public services. What a community actually collects, and when, is set by assessment practice and the incentive agreement — not by the announced investment figure.
What depends on the project
Assessment and equipment classification, abatement or PILOT terms, local tax rates, and interaction with the state school funding formula.
Claim · Noise
“Data centers are quiet neighbors.”
What we know
Cooling equipment produces continuous low-frequency sound, and noise complaints are common near facilities built without acoustic conditions. Mitigation through equipment selection, barriers, setbacks and enclosures is well established and effective when designed in.
What depends on the project
Cooling equipment, setbacks, terrain, surrounding land use, permit conditions and generator testing schedules.
Claim · Property Values
“Data centers lower nearby property values.”
What we know
Published findings are mixed and highly sensitive to distance, buffering and existing land use. There is not strong evidence for a universal effect in either direction, and confident claims on either side generally outrun the data.
What depends on the project
Proximity, screening and buffers, whether the site was previously industrial, and the strength of the surrounding housing market.
Claim · Energy
“AI data centers will overwhelm the grid.”
What we know
Large-load growth is real and is straining planning assumptions in several regions, particularly on the timeline for new generation and transmission. Whether it overwhelms a specific system depends on resource planning, interconnection timing and demand flexibility.
What depends on the project
Regional transmission organization, generation queue and timing, whether the load can operate flexibly, and how quickly capacity is added.
Claim · Environment
“Data centers are environmentally harmless because they have no smokestacks.”
What we know
The dominant environmental effect is upstream: the electricity consumed and how it is generated. Site-level impacts including backup generator emissions, stormwater and land conversion are real and are managed through standard permitting.
What depends on the project
Generation mix serving the load, whether new clean capacity is procured and is additional, site type, and permit conditions.
